Children are wrongly believed to be innately unruly. Remarkably, child's self-discipline comes from freedom. Freedom of choice is fundamental to the Montessori approach. This is because choice allows children to discover their needs, interests and abilities. Furthermore, freedom of choice encourages children to be engaged in their learning, and thus discover the outcome of the activity.
The thirst to know is ignited by curiosity; children have undying curiosity that is always vibrant and alive. A curious child is a lifelong enthusiastic learner. A prepared environment in a Montessori School enables the child to explore and discover their curious journey of learning.
The Montessori method of learning encourages children to take ownership of their own learning, an essential step in fostering the child’s natural desire to learn. Children who learn to be internally motivated are more likely to become responsible, self-disciplined, confident, initiative-takers, with strong academic skills, and a lifelong love for learning.
The Montessori classroom is a "prepared environment" planned in advance to support independent, children-initiated work. In the classroom, children are free to select materials of their preference and through curiosity and innate interest engage in learning activities of their own individual choice. The classroom environment consists of materials for their academic learning, Children discover the joy of learning while a teacher guides them. Working with materials helps the children in “making discoveries, it cultivates concentration, motivation, self-discipline, and a love of learning.
Dr. Maria Montessori, Italy’s first woman physician, developed innovative educational approaches based on the way children naturally master knowledge and skills. She discovered that children learn independently and at their own pace, and she created an ideal environment in which students choose among activities appropriate for their developmental level. In 1907, Dr. Montessori opened her first casa dei bambini — or “children’s house” — in Rome, and the Montessori method of education was born.
Through her scientific observation and analysis, Dr. Montessori discovered that children learn most effectively by enhancing their natural periods of early learning in an environment where they feel supported and secure. The Montessori philosophy encourages a comfortable, productive relationship between children, their teachers and their parents.
